Information

The miraculous episode of the multiplication of the loaves is described in all four gospels:  from five loaves of bread and two fishes, Jesus feeds a crowd of five thousand people.  In Gothic tradition, the multi-episode narrative cycle used in other depictions disappears here in favour of a composition situated in a unique landscape and filled with the multitudes of people who have come to receive the sacred food.  Flowery patterns are found here in superimposition, particularly in the thick carpet of flowers beneath the feet of Christ.  In the background, a light-filled space contrasts with the density of the crowd and creates a vista of the Sea of Galilee.
