Information

In 1985, Éric Poitevin made his remarkable photographic debut with portraits of World War One veterans.  Following a period of study at the Villa Médicis (French School of Rome) in 1990, he created numerous series focussing on the themes of the body, flesh, animals, and landscapes.  The concept of the perception of landscape is addressed here through the issue of photographic objectivity.  Éric Poitevin’s woodland scene invites the viewer to experience a kind of nature where the absence of aesthetic motive or expectation questions the work’s perspective.  The large-scale view camera work seen here, which Poitevin applies to all of his work, reveals an image of rare density, with attention to detail and great precision.
